Must-Know Safeguard Tips for Winter Cabin Owners
Winter is just around the corner, which means that now is the perfect time to make sure that you’ve taken care of all of the last projects around your vacation home. Whether you’re planning on spending weekends at your cabin throughout the winter months or are closing it up until next spring, there are several steps to take before the snow starts to fall.
Clean up the Yard and Gutters
Rake up and dispose of leaves before you leave your vacation home for the winter. If any trees or bushes need trimming, now is a good time to take care of this, too. Also be sure to clear your gutters of leaves or debris. This will help melting snow drain easily in the springtime.
Inspect the Exterior of Your Cabin
Walk around outside your home and look at the siding, trim, and windows. Check for any damage or holes where pests could enter and patch up anything that needs repairs before the winter.
Check Your Heating System
It’s a good idea to have your heater inspected by a professional once per year, and before the winter is a smart time to do so. Be sure to clean or replace your furnace filter while you’re at it.
Turn off the Water
If you won’t be back until spring, it’s a good idea to turn off the water to your home. Shut off the main waterline and be sure water is drained from the toilets and faucets. If you plan on coming back regularly throughout the winter, you may not want to turn off the water, so be sure to keep your furnace running to maintain a temperature of at least 55 degrees, in order to keep the pipes from freezing.
Clean up Inside
This is a good time to do a deep cleaning of your interior space. Dust, vacuum, and clean the windows. Clean out any food and perishable items from the fridge and cupboards, especially if you won’t be back until next spring.
Last-minute Items
If you’re not planning to visit your vacation home regularly during the colder months, take a few minutes to unplug any lamps or appliances around the home. Make sure to close any blinds or curtains, lock all doors and windows, and take out the trash while you’re leaving.
Taking these steps can help ensure that you’re keeping your cabin in good shape for years to come. If you’re on the hunt for a vacation home, our team can help you find your perfect retreat in the Northwoods of Wisconsin.
